About Nicholas Oliver
I help leadership teams turn emerging technology into products that ship and businesses that grow. Twenty years of doing this — from the inside of two venture-backed startups I founded to the middle of one of the world’s largest brand organisations — has left me with one operating conviction: the gap is almost never the technology. It’s framing the right product, choosing the right partners, and getting an organisation to actually adopt what it says it wants.
That’s the gap I close.
What I do for clients
Four ways engagements typically take shape.
Interim & fractional product leadership
I embed as an Interim Head of Product, Product Director, CPO or Head of AI & Innovation, own the roadmap, and deliver. As Interim Product Director at Performance.io I turned a search agency's manual R&D into production AI tooling the whole firm now runs on, cutting cost-to-deliver in those workflows by more than 60% and supporting the positioning behind its 2025 growth investment from Apiary Capital.
AI strategy that ships
Plenty of consultants will hand you an AI strategy deck. I set the strategy and then stand up the systems: agentic pipelines, LLM integration, retrieval, evaluation, and model and vendor selection across Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Mistral. Much of my build work is done by AI coding agents under my close review — so my advice is grounded in what today’s models can actually carry in production, not in slides.
Innovation & transformation
Before the startups I was Global Creative Technical Director inside WPP for Ford Motor Company — the network’s lead voice on emerging technology across a 1,300-person, five-agency operation in thirty-plus markets. I wrote the strategy for how a conservative global organisation finds, pilots and rolls out new technology, then made it happen. I’ve been repeating that pattern ever since, now with AI.
Growth, partnerships & go-to-market
I’ve negotiated a world-first co-branded data product with Telefónica across roughly 24 million customers, landed a Twilio partnership within three months of founding a startup, and signed content deals with Universal Music Group, Live Nation and Snapchat on behalf of Ford. If your product needs a market, a partner or a distribution wedge, I’ve built those routes before.
How I work
I’m a player-coach.
Senior enough to sit with boards, investors and regulators; hands-on enough to define the product and build the proof myself. I work in small, fast loops: frame the opportunity, build enough to test it honestly, then scale what survives contact with reality. I bring in specialists where a piece of work needs them, and I leave behind working systems and teams that can run them — not dependency on me.
I’m also comfortable where the stakes are high and the rules are real. I’ve shipped product in one of the world’s strictest health-data environments (scaling a remote HIV testing service across Germany for ViiV Healthcare, GSK’s HIV specialist company), built consent architecture years ahead of GDPR, and founded a company on AI transparency before the regulation caught up. Regulated, sensitive, complex: that’s home ground.
The record behind it
I founded people.io, a personal-data platform that grew past 150,000 users in six months at roughly four times industry retention, reached #1 trending on the UK App Store, raised over £2.6m and earned NASDAQ Rising Star recognition. I founded FORTYEIGHT.ai, an AI transparency startup backed by Innovate UK and deployed with Twilio and Formula 1. Neither became an exit; both made me a sharper operator than the wins alone would have — and I’ll tell you exactly why.
I’ve served on techUK’s Cloud, Data, Analytics & AI Council, advised on GDPR and ePrivacy as they were written into UK law, and spoken everywhere from SxSW to the Financial Times’ Future of Media.
- 150k+people.io users in six months
- £2.6m+raised across ventures
- 60%+cost-to-deliver cut
- ~24mcustomers reached via Telefónica

Working with me
Engagements usually start one of two ways: a defined interim leadership role (three to twelve months, embedded with your team) or a short, sharp piece of strategy-plus-build work that proves a direction before you commit to it. Either way you get the same thing — senior product judgement, current hands-on AI capability, and delivery.
